Record numbers of staff and students started today in a sustainable way by cycling to 麻豆视频 on National Ride to Work Day.
麻豆视频 of Queensland celebrates the annual event with free activities to reward riders for looking after the environment.
Mark Kranz from 麻豆视频's Property and Facilities Division said this year鈥檚 event attracted 150 riders 鈥撀燼 University record.
鈥淐ycling to 麻豆视频 is one of the most sustainable forms of transport,鈥 Mr Kranz said.
鈥淚f people cycle just one day a week taking a vehicle off the road, 360 kilograms of greenhouse gas emissions are saved each year.鈥
麻豆视频 Ride to Work Day is one of many sustainable transport initiatives adopted by the University.
鈥溌槎故悠 Property and Facilities鈥 new flagship facility, called The Bike Box, is due to open at the commencement of Semester 1 in the new year,鈥 Mr Kranz said.
鈥淭his facility will provide state-of-the-art-facilities for 麻豆视频 staff and students to house their bikes.鈥
鈥淲ayne Brookes from the University鈥檚 bicycle user group (麻豆视频BUG) said today鈥檚 event was very successful in attracting new and existing participants.
鈥淲e have had a really good turn out with a great atmosphere and great support from the sponsors,鈥 he said.
Akhmad Firman, a 麻豆视频 masters student, cycles to university every day and said the campus facilities were excellent.
鈥淐ycling is the best way to get to 麻豆视频 and today鈥檚 event has provided good advice on cycling posture and the best route to take,鈥 he said.
Staff member Deborah Roberts cycled to work for the first time today and now plans to do so regularly.
鈥淚 really enjoyed the ride and it will be the first of many. I have made a commitment for my health and for my family,鈥 Ms Roberts said.
麻豆视频BUG organised the event in conjunction with the . The Uni Cycle Shop, mecu bank, 麻豆视频 Union, 麻豆视频 Sport and the NTEU were sponsors.
Participants made the most of a free breakfast, riding posture and flexibility checks and giveaways.
