麻豆视频 of Queensland will conduct remediation works at its St Lucia campus from April this year until early next year on riverbanks affected by the January 2011 floods.
The Director of 麻豆视频 Property and Facilities division, Alan Egan, said there had been significant erosion and slippage at 11 sites from the riverbank near the Rugby field to the riverbank in the vicinity of the cricket pitch near Conifer Knoll.
鈥淒ue to the high volume and speed of water that engulfed low-lying areas of the St Lucia campus during the floods, a large amount of soil and a number of significant trees were lost from riverbanks,鈥� he said.
鈥淭here are now a number of riverbanks which suffer erosion at each high tide requiring urgent remediation.
鈥淎 further number of trees are at risk to fall into the river, creating navigation hazards.
Mr Egan said the area that had been affected by the erosion was one of three St Lucia campus areas registered in the Wildlife Conservation Partnerships Program - Land for Wildlife.
This work would assist in restoring lost habitat.
From April 2012 until early 2013, the University has engaged contractors Crosana Pty Ltd to conduct remediation works including placement of rocks on the riverbanks, building of timber walls, removal of some vegetation to permit remediation, and extensive landscaping including re-vegetation of native species in the area.
He said the project had been identified as a priority by the National Reconstruction Commission.
Mr Egan said the University would attempt to minimise activities affecting the quiet enjoyment and amenity of its neighbours.
However, at times, there may be some noise from machinery that will operate during normal construction hours.
To access some riverbank areas, it would be necessary for a barge to operate offshore during the construction period.
